Mikel Rafael

Born in Texas, raised in Hong Kong, Mikel Rafael started playing guitar at fourteen, inspired by Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, though it was Jeff Buckley who became his hero and veered him into the singer-songwriter direction. At eighteen he moved to Los Angeles to pursue music. He initially focused on playing electric guitar for local bands, while quietly honing his songwriting abilities. After going through a series of bands, he started testing out his material in open mics, and quickly gained a reputation among the local artist community as an evocative story-teller and gifted lyricist.

He quickly went from playing open mics to solo acoustic shows. At one of these shows he met ex-Mowgli’s producer and radio DJ Christian James Hand, who enjoyed his music so much that he offered to record him for free. Together they recorded a total of eight live, on-the-spot performances of Mikel Rafael originals, which were released as an album in late 2016 called ‘This Twisted World of Ours’ under his then-stage name Mikelangelo. Hand played some of those songs on his podcast and on a show he was then hosting on the now-defunct 100.3’s ‘The Sound’, which further expanded Mikel Rafael’s audience.

In early 2018, Mikel Rafael started writing new material for a new EP, which he released in October 2018 titled ‘A Sidewalk’s Dream’. He continues to pursue his passion, and regularly performs around local LA venues.

Frank Fairfield

Frank Fairfield performed American vernacular music professionally for several years, eventually realizing how mentally unfit he was for that profession. He quit the music racket and joined a crew of unlicensed construction workers servicing a hand full of unusual small museums and theater in Los Angeles. That led him to the The Yard Theater, where he now currently resides and helps run with his friend John Ennis. He still plays music, practicing the violin everyday for his own edification and occasionally performing with friends like Meredith Axelrod and The Temple Street Stringband.

Oceanator

Immense amounts of wonder and power are often found tucked away in the most dark and unpredictable parts of the ocean. In much the same way, immense amounts of wonder and power can be found throughout Brooklyn, NY solo artist Oceantor’s work– even in the most dark and unpredictable moments.

Elise Okusami has been a musician since the tender age of 9 years old when she first learned to play guitar. Her current force of nature quality is clearly inspired by a lifelong intense passion for music. In the 4th grade, soon after learning guitar, Okusami started her first band with her brother and a few friends. She hasn’t slowed since then, also having drummed for multiple projects in New York. As she eventually grew into her solo musical endeavor, Oceanator, Okusami has exemplified the sheer power of her project’s namesake through and through.

Mr. Motes

Taking his name from the main character of Flannery O’Connor’s Wise Blood, Mr. Motes creates musical landscapes that aim to challenge norms. Landscapes that are unquestionably Christ-haunted. He is Ohio-born, Nashville-raised, and currently resides in Los Angeles, California. His songs are about divorce, parenthood, corporate jobs, student debt, and just what-the-fuck this is all supposed to mean for someone who’s only 28 years old.

Mr. Motes is heavily influenced by Radiohead, Grizzly Bear, and Jeff Buckley. He weaves odd time signatures with Biblical and mythological imagery but does so with a certain amount of grace and sincerity that makes it all relatable. At the end of the day, if you’re dancing while also questioning your perceived reality, then Mr. Motes is happy.
