Sunny War

It’s no secret that great art comes from the margins. From those who are either pushed to create from inner forces, or who create to show they deserve to be recognized. Los Angeles based street singer, guitarist, and roots music revolutionary Sunny War has always been an outsider, always felt the drive to define her place in the world through music and songwriting.

As a young black girl growing up in Nashville, she searched for her own roots, looking first to the blues she heard from her mother’s boyfriend, and learning from a local guitarist. Moving to Los Angeles in her teens, she searched for herself in the LA punk scene, playing house shows with FIDLAR, and shoplifting DVDs from big box stores to trade at Amoeba Records for 80s punk albums. But here too she found herself on the outside, working to bridge her foundation in country blues and American roots guitar traditions with the punk scene she called home. She first made her name with this work, bringing a wickedly virtuosic touch on the fingerstyle guitar that sprang from her own self-discoveries on the instrument. But her restless spirit, a byproduct of growing up semi-nomadic with a single mother, led her to Venice Beach, California, where she’s been grinding the pavement for some years now, making a name for her prodigious guitar work and incisive songwriting, which touches on everything from police violence to alcoholism to love found and lost.

Tom Freund

Over the course of his career, singer/songwriter and Americana artist Tom Freund has released more than a dozen records, collaborated with legends such as Elvis Costello and Jackson Browne, pulled a half-decade stint on bass for alt-country pioneers The Silos, and has shared bills with everyone from Matthew Sweet to Guided by Voices. Freund’s intimate, heartfelt new solo album, East of Lincoln, chronicles a personal journey along the path from self doubt to enlightenment. “Time to take the wheel and turn this thing around / Time to make a deal and see what’s going down,” he affirms on “Runaround.” Freund takes his time and lets these new songs simmer, and that—along with memorable guest spots from longtime friend and collaborator Ben Harper and an all-star cast of session players—is a big part of record’s charm.

Quietly reveling in its unhurried pace, East of Lincoln sticks in the mind long after listening. Within the record’s framework, Freund tackles progress, hope, and the corporatization of his beloved Venice Beach, which he captures as a bittersweet vortex of vanishing beauty and possibility. “I know I’m no saint, but I know when something is good and when it ain’t,” he sings on the title track, mourning Venice’s fading allure while basking in its once-electric atmosphere. The album dances on the edge of a stark duality: the sun-drenched SoCal beach town’s demise and Freund’s own eventual growth arc. “Better start swimming toward the shore,” he urges on “Abandoning the Ship.”

The Zmed Brothers

If The Everly Brothers, The Smothers Brothers, Ween, and Tenacious D all had a two headed baby it would be The Zmed Brothers.

The Zmed Brothers, Dylan and Zachary, are a mandolin and guitar playing, close harmony singing, brother duo that plays both covers and originals. They echo the traditional sensibilities of acts like Simon and Garfunkel and The Everly Brothers while bringing in their own sense of modern aesthetic.

The Bird Dogs, one of their current projects, bring a genuine and youthful Everly Brothers experience to the stage. The Zmed Brothers celebrate the genetic intimacy so ever present in the harmonies created by Don and Phil. When the guitar became electric, the Everly Brothers bridged the gap between Country and Rock n Roll. With countless hits and classics, the Everly Brothers inspired bands like The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, The Kinks, Buddy Holly, and many groups that utilize the blend of two part harmony. Their career spanned three decades and continue to influence artists around the world.

The Zmed Brothers are also know for the earlier project The Janks, an LA local blues/folk/rock band.
